About :

Would you reroute a train to run over one person to prevent it from running over five others? In the classic “Trolley Problem” survey, most people say they would. But I wanted to test what people would actually do in a real-life situation. In the world’s first realistic simulation of this controversial moral dilemma, unsuspecting subjects will be forced to make what they believe is a life-or-death decision.

I check out the Vsauce channel and practically all I see is Mind Field episodes I can't watch. All of the decent Vsauce content is now behind a paywall that goes to fund Google's despicable data harvesting empire.

Lol just because some clinical psychologist sat next to him and he went to some review board, doesnt make it scientific. He acts if he contributed to research, but the whole design was unethical as fuck. Like some paper in the near future is gonna refer to a Vsauce video on YouTube. It was still interesting to watch nonetheless, but people need to stop trying to make psychological research more sensational than it actually is. Makes the whole field look kind of frivolous.

OMG THIS IS A GREAT SERIES!! I’m going to go back to the first season so I can watch every one! I LOVE cerebral shows....but I’m glad I wasn’t one of the test subjects with the “trolly car” study! I’m a bit nervous after just watching it. Not logical but the possibility of being in a real situation like this is very real. Thank you for sharing the study Mine Field!

Just flip the switch when the train is halfway across so that it derails and kills everyone.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Nobody has the right to put another person in such a situation if they didn't agree to do it beforehand. If I was one of the subjects I would sue these people even before I got home that day. There is a reason why this experiment was never done before. This is simply unacceptable.

One problem I see with this dilemma is legal causality. I can see someone willing to flip the switch but hesitate because if they flip the switch, they would then be legally responsible for the one death but had you left the lever alone it would have been an accident.

What I don't like is how the production team tries to cheese everything up. It's shown as if it was primarily Michael setting up the experiment and not the entire crew, and as if Greg Cason simply joined the project upon request and not upon payment.

So first, my critics on the experiment:
1 - Sample group is extremelly small. No conclusive data or at least significant data could be retrieved. Plus, a lot of factors would need to be pointed out regarding the chosen group's morality code, uprising, notions of philosophy, etc. With such few participants, probably all of these factors would be discrepant among themselves and therefore could not be taken into account when considering the conclusions of the study, which is, to my opinion, quite problematic.

2 - No actual measuring of people's vital signs were taken. Pupil dialation, heart rhythm, blood pressure, etc, which would make testimonials the only actual data for measuring state of mind. Which is unacceptable.

3 - No additional tests were conducted following the test to research additional effects regarding the trauma-like experience they were into. These additional tests could even strengthen the conclusions of the first test besides drawing additional considerations regarding the experiment, such like, is trauma really experienced comparing the test to other measurings from people who experienced real-life situations such as that and how closely their body signs would be, among others.

Honestly, it seemed great to see this in action. It really seems to be good enough material to pay to view, but unfortunately I am unable to do that right now. So all the good faith, but also my scientific considerations, to Michael and his awesome work to build this event. Kudos.

Edit: Fuck, the guy was fucking crying. Good grief, give him a hug or something! Be human, guys, come on, that was fucked up. The guy literaly went through something real for him and you guys just kept your distance... that is seriously fucked up.

horibble... 1. The train wasn't going fast enough and 2. I would of thought they would of seen the train and done nothing assuming they knew the train was coming... 3. They were "construction" workers you would figure they knew what they were doing... You can tell in their face they were more confused then worried because the test was more confusing as to why isn't any doing something or getting off the track. You need to make the experiment better maybe upfront tell them sometimes u have to switch from tack a to track b if someone is on track (Make up a story about saving someone ones life from doing it).

See I'd love to pretend that I'm a good person and that I'd try to save as many lives as possible but I'd rather not get arrested lol

You could make arguments for either choice being morally reprehensible but only one will actually get me in trouble so I'd rather just save my ass by walking out the door. It's not like I know the victims in the first place so I'd be able to get over it pretty quickly.

Call me a piece of shit if you want but at least I'm being rational

For me I would not have touched anything,it’s not my job,if the rail company can be stupid to hire someone who leaves his seat -and it’s a damn important job-they should not expect me to play god here.I would die knowing that the single person had kids and wife waiting-so would the five but it’s not my fault-I would probably run away

What about the next step here?? ... The show starts talking about self-driving cars. The car would automatically make the decision based on programming. A person on the sidewalk has more of an expectation of safety than several people crossing against a light, but the autonomous car would hit the guy on the sidewalk to minimize loss of life...

If these test subjects had what they thought was knowledge of those on the railroad would they have acted differently? What if they viewed the man on track 2 as a good person and the five on track 1 has bad people?

I'd just sit there and let it happen. I'm pretty sure the first day of railway worker school is be aware of your surroundings at all times and don't stand in the middle of the track to take a fucking phone call. So my conclusion is it's their own fault for being tits on the railway.

What about the driver of the train's contribution? One of my favourite videos on YouTube. So well made, it makes you feel the suspense too. I feel sorry for Cory. My thought process would be: "this is not happening. The train won't hit the workers, somehow, something will stop the train." but when it wouldn't I would get super anxious.
